Specialty Engineering
NERC Compliance, Dynamic Modeling, Substation Studies
We are the Power System Stability Group (PSSG) of Shermco. We provide advanced power system expertise to generator and substation owners so they can reliably interconnect to the Bulk Electric System. Our capabilities range from boots on the ground system testing and equipment configuration to specialized modeling system disturbances.
We differentiate ourselves by providing service where our clients’ concerns are central and by acting on opportunities where we know the client’s role in the power industry, in its technology, or both.
Shermco PSSG has performed hundreds of NERC Protection and Control (PRC) Standard assessments and Modeling, Data and Analysis (MOD) Standard generator tests and model validations for coal, gas, hydro, wind, and solar generation owners throughout the United States and Canada.
Dynamic Modeling
Positive Sequence Modeling (PSSE/PSLF)
In addition to dynamic models required for the above NERC standards, Shermco PSSG is experienced with specific additional requirements that sites registered in CAISO and ERCOT regions have to meet.
CAISO:
Complete data collectons for CAISO’s Generating and Interconnecting Facility data request and associated detailed reviews of dynamic models.
ERCOT:
Complete ERCOT reactive testing and ERCOT Model Ouality Tests (MOT), and Parameter Verifications.
EMT Modeling for Renewable Generation (PSCAD)
Many renewable generators are now required to provide Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) models for their sites so transmission planners can perform more detailed studies and grid performance assessments. Shermco PSSG works with the owner and equipment manufacturers to develop dynamic models that meet the requirements of entities such as ERCOT and CAISO.
EMT Model Validation
Shermco PSSG develops site EMT models utilizing PSCAD and validates the models against verified positive sequence models or other criteria as is required by CAISO, ISO NE, ERCOT, and others. We complete ERCOT Model Quality Tests (MQT), for sites in ERCOT’s region.

Substation Studies
Power system studies determine system parameters during system disturbances. Performing these studies is essential to designing a reliable, safe site for generator and substation owners.
Insulation Coordination & Transient Overvoltage Study:
Perform insulation coordination studies and determine overvoltage levels due to switching events.
Transient Recovery Voltage Study:
Model overvoltage levels across circuit breakers during transition from conducting to non-conducting state to identify high voltage transients.
Harmonics Study:
Inverter based generation or non-linear loads can introduce harmonic distortion. Pre-and post-energization testing and modelling will quantify compliance with IEEE Standard 519.
Load Flow and Reactive Compensation Study:
Model feeders and substation to quantify real power load flow and reactive power compensation requirements to comply with interconnection agreement.
AC Short Circuit Study:
Model AC system down to the load side of feeder circuit breakers and assessment of short circuit current levels at the substation to compare fault currents to withstand rating of equipment identifying over-dutied equipment.
AC and DC Arc Flash Study:
Model AC system down to the load side of feeder circuit breakers and the DC system to evaluate Arc Thermal Performance Value in calories/cm2 for appropriate selection of Personal Protective Equipment.
Grounding Study:
Model equipment within the substation fence to provide a grounding design balancing the copper ground grid and insulating surface materials while maintaining step and touch potentials per IEEE-80.
Protective Device Coordination:
Using the fault currents calculated in the short circuit study, recommendations will be made for protection settings to coordinate with site and transmission line protection.
